Footnotes:
(G-515) Slavomir Rawicz was a 24 year old Cavalry officer in the Polish army through 1939. The Russians arrested him immediately after they conquered Eastern Poland, and convicted him of espionage because he spoke Russian He was sent to Siberia to Labor Camp 303 with a 25 year sentence. He and six (6) other prisoners escaped and walked 3000 miles south to India with no maps, equipped only with handmade fur clothing a knife and an axe. Miraculously four (4) of them survived even though they crossed the Gobi Desert and the Himalayas with NO other tools. (S'posedly while crossing Nepal, it appears that they encountered the Yeti!)

(G-542) Martha Albrand born Heidi Huberta Freybe Loewengard (1914-1981) also wrote under pen-names Katrin Holland, Christine Lambert, and  Katrin J. Lamon. In 1950, the book After Midnight won the Grand Prix de Littérature Policière International Prize, the most prestigious award for crime and detective fiction in France.

(G-547) Austin Hall (1883-1933) wrote mainly in the Western genre. His science fiction writings were mainly in pulps (Argosy, All-Story Weekly, and Weird Tales) and his most recognized (or berated) work is collaboration with Homer Eon Flint in "The Blind Spot" (serialized in Argosy, later published separately in 1951). He wrote an independent sequel "The Spot of Life" (serialized in Argosy, later published separately in 1964).

(G-547) Homer Eon Flint (188? - 1924) is remembered for "The Blind Spot." His short career provided many stories to the pulps (Argosy and All-Story Weekly) during the early 1920's and the posthumous novels (ACE editions are from 1965 - 1966) were derived from stories originating in those magazines.

(G-558) Genevieve Holden is the penname of Genevieve Long Pou. The author of seven mystery novels between 1953 and 1976, she died Sunday, April 22nd, 2005 in Atlanta GA at the age of 87 (born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1919). She attended the University of Mississippi for two years before transferring to the University of Georgia. After college, Pou worked on the Birmingham Post and the Idaho Statesman before writing her first mystery in 1953. As a mystery (or more appropriately Gothic suspense/mystery) writer born and raised in Mississippi, she is one of the many authors honored by being included in the University of Mississippi's online archive exhibit entitled Murder With Southern Hospitality: An Exhibition of Mississippi Mysteries.

(G-564) John Oram Thomas (d. 1980), in addition to the ACE MFU volumes, also ghost-wrote several biographies of WWII heroes, some books on traditional Welsh remedies, a book on the Danish Resistance (called "The Giant Killers"), and was a print journalist with the South Wales Argus, the Empire News, and many other UK based papers before retiring to Australia.

(G-571) David McDaniel wrote several of the original stories for The Man From U.N.C.L.E. He also wrote the second of "The Prisoner" spin-off novels (ACE 67901) as well as one science fiction title (ACE G-667; The Arsenal Out of Time).

(G-581) John T. Phillifent wrote SF from the mid-1950's to the early-1970's, and died in 1976. Most of his work was published under the pen-name "John Rackham" (over a dozen Ace Double halves under this name.) He claimed to reserve his best work for publication under his own name, some of those stories appear in the mid-1960's in Analog, and finally a half-dozen books under his name in the 1970's (including 2 ACE Double halves.) It is not too surprising that Phillifent followed the inventor of the ACE Double (Donald A. Wollheim) to the new company (DAW Books) that he formed in 1972 when he left ACE Books.

(G-645) Robert Coulson and Gene DeWeese continued their collaboration with the science fiction tale Gates of the Universe (1975) published as LASER Book #4 as well as the light-hearted recursive sf romps "Now You See It/Him/Them" (1975) and "Charles Fort Never Mentioned Wombats" (1977). Gene DeWeeseE (1934-2012) also contributed novels to the "Star Trek" and "Dinotopia" shared universes.

(G-669) Leigh Douglas Brackett (b. 1915; d. 1978) was one of the earliest of the women science fiction (and fantasy) writers. Her first published science fiction story, Martian Quest, appeared in Astounding in 1940. She was a prolific writer in the genres of science fiction (her most recognized story is probably The Long Tomorrow, c. 1955), mystery, and western as well as television and movie scripts ("The Big Sleep" - 1946 and "Rio Bravo" -1958).

(G-688) Jeffrey Jones (1944-2013) started out as a geology major at Georgia Tech and switched to art. Jones illustrated in the comic genre for Wally Wood and Jim Warren (Creepy, Eerie) as well as the science fiction (Amazing and Fantastic) and fantasy genres. Numerous awards and nominations include the Hugo Award (nominated 4 times), British Fantasy Award (1979), and World Fantasy Award for Best Artist (1986).

(G-703) Michael F. Gilbert (1947 - 2000) was an artist, author, and publisher. Gilbert was married to Sheila Gilbert, co-publisher of DAW Books and provided various artwork for many DAW titles. This cover art is one of his earliest works. He also was the illustrator and co-author for Andre Norton's The Day of the Ness (1975). His other area of interest was military history and wargaming, which led to his work in game development.

(G-730) Don Ivan Punchatz (b. 1936) graduated from the School of Visual Arts (NYC) and Cooper Unito School of Fine Arts. He has worked in advertising, animation, and medical illustration before becoming a freelance illustrator. Although he is known for his book covers (ACE, Berkley, Dell, Warner, etc.), his work is also found in many national magazines (Playboy, TIme, Esquire, Rolling Stone, etc.). Since 1970, Punchatz has been teaching illustration at Texas Christian University.

(G-756) Alexei Panshin (b. 1940) has been a fan (received the Hugo for his writings in Fandom in 1967), a critic (his study of Robert A. Heinlein, "Heinlein in Dimension," provides insight into RAH's writing career), and author (he received a Nebula for his first novel, Rite of Passage in 1968). Star Well and its companion novels The Thurb Revolution and Masque World follow the interstellar adventures of Anthony Villers.
