Dalton Trumbo (aka James Dalton Trumbo) |
Fiction | 1959 | $0.50 | (c.1939; 1959; 1st ACE Star edition) |
listed as "Complete & Unabridged" Originally published by Lippincot in 1939, Trumbo's 1939 anti-war novel, Johnny Got His Gun, won a National Book Award (then known as an American Book Sellers Award). The novel was inspired by an article Trumbo had read about a Canadian soldier who had lost all his limbs in World War I and was visited in hospital by the Prince of Wales. In 1971, Trumbo directed the film adaptation of Johnny Got His Gun, which starred Timothy Bottoms, Diane Varsi, Jason Robards and Donald Sutherland. During the McCarthy Era in 1947, Trumbo, along with nine other writers and directors, was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee as an unfriendly witness to testify on the presence of communist influence in Hollywood. Trumbo and the other nine refused to give information. After conviction for contempt of Congress, he was blacklisted, and in 1950, spent 11 months in prison in the federal penitentiary in Ashland, Kentucky. Throughout the 1950's, Trumbo continued to produce screenplays, all under pseudonyms. Only in 1960, when with the support of Otto Preminger and Kirk Douglas, Trumbo was credited for his screenplays for Exodus (1960) and Spartacus (1960), did he resume using his own name for his screenplays. |

The painting is by Robert Abbett who is well known for his Ballantine Book covers including the first editions of Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars series. He was also a major artist at ACE and other publishers of 1950's genre paperbacks. The art is painted on illustration board and is framed in a black metal frame to the size of 26.25 X 19.25". The mat opening is just over 18.5 X 10.5". The painting is not signed but is credited to Abbett in the book Science Fiction of the 20th Centery by Frank W. Robinson See Footnotes #1 An alternative preliminary version done for the art director at ACE Books. This additional painting is painted on a 8.5 X 5 & 3/8" of illustration board which is double matted to a size of 10 X 8". The ACE paperback version of the book carries the date of 1949 on the copyright page but the paperback price guide dates it as being published in 1962. The original hardback release of the book was in 1949. |

1963 | $0.50 | (c.1959; 1963; 1st thus) ACE Star Edition |
Original cover art for K-175. Attributed to Lou Marchetti (1920-1992). Gouache on illustration board, overall size is 20.5 x 15, image size is 18.5 x 12.5. Although this painting portrays the usual genre trappings of a gothic novel (i.e. stormy / windy night, a single light shining in the foreboding castle in the distance), this is an unusual gothic cover, as it depicts 2 women instead of the normal lone damsel in distress. The relationship of the two women, based strictly on the artwork, is left up to the viewers perception. The son-in-law of the artist Lou Marchetti, indicates that his wife remembers that she and her mother posed for this painting. |
